Spatial Design 2 / Final project
Final Project
Todo:
Process:
My overall space planning is as shown in this bubble chart, which includes multiple functional areas such as a core product area, a smart office area and a rest area. My art installation will be one of the core highlights of this space.
Based on the bubble chart I had made before, I started to make my plan chart to create the corresponding relative areas.
Then I started to draw a plan of the main furniture I needed to place on paper. I arranged it according to the proportion of the task and the size of the furniture.Next, I model in Blender. I first built the required long and high area. Mr Zeon required 16x23
After completing the modelling and rendering, I started to make my presentation board.
Reflection:
Looking back at the entire Assignment 2, it was a challenging exploration for me. The core difficulty was how to transform the abstract and sometimes even contradictory user needs in the early research into a specific, feasible and creative space design plan.
My starting point was clear. Through the analysis of 30 questionnaires, I clarified the core task of the design: to create a "super symbol" that can condense the brand image for Huawei stores that lack a unified visual focus. However, the road from "knowing what to do" to "knowing how to do it" is much more tortuous than I imagined. My initial conception stage was actually a bit divergent, wavering between multiple concepts. I have tried both concrete brand elements and pure emotional keywords, but I encountered the first bottleneck in how to organically combine the brand recognition of "high-end luxury" with the atmospheric demand of "warm technology".
A key turning point came from a practical assessment of my own abilities: my 3D modelling skills. I realised that some of the initial, overly organic design solutions in my mind, although conceptually attractive, were difficult to present in a high-quality model with my current technical level. This seemingly "insufficient" practical limitation has become the most important "constraint" in my design. It forced me to abandon unrealistic complex forms and think about how to express the same profound concepts with simpler geometric language, materials, and light and shadow. This finally led me to the "Light Prism Array", a solution with basic geometric bodies as the core.
Even after the general direction of the "Light Prism Array" was determined, its final form went through several iterations. From the originally envisioned prism forest that filled the entire space to the final version of the more focused and powerful independent "energy crystal", this evolution process itself is full of trade-offs. Looking back now, I think this is exactly the process that a designer must go through – finding the best balance between grand creative ideas and realistic production conditions.
In general, this assignment taught me much more than how to complete a design plan. My biggest gain is to understand that "limitations" are also part of design and sometimes even a friend of better design. I realised that a simple idea that is perfectly executed is far more powerful than a complex concept that cannot be expressed clearly due to technical limitations. This experience gave me a more realistic understanding of the entire design process and made me understand that an excellent designer not only needs creativity but also the ability to make wise decisions between ideals and reality.
